Extraction methods

Extraction processes can be carried out using various methods, either in the hot or cold, those that involve heating (technical) and those that are done at room temperature (cold).

The three primary extraction methods are:

1. Mechanical Extraction:

– Process Overview: Mechanically extracting CNSL involves the use of mechanical presses or expellers to physically press the cashew nut shells and release the liquid.

– Key Points: This method is relatively straightforward and cost-effective, making it suitable for small to medium-scale operations. Solvent Extraction.

2. Solvent extraction:

– Process Overview: Solvent extraction utilizes organic solvents, such as hexane, to dissolve and extract CNSL from the cashew nut shells. The solvent is then evaporated to obtain the liquid.

– Key Points: Solvent extraction can achieve higher yields and is often employed in larger-scale industrial processes. However, it may involve additional steps to remove residual solvents.

3. Thermal Extraction:

– Process Overview: Thermal extraction, also known as distillation, involves applying heat to separate the components of CNSL based on their different boiling points. The thermal extraction process typically includes steps such as: heating, vaporization, condensation, collection, and fractional distillation (optional).

– Key points: This thermal extraction method is effective in isolating the valuable constituents of CNSL based on their thermal properties, providing a refined and concentrated end product. It is a common technique in industrial settings for large-scale CNSL extraction processes.
